July 2007, Warwick Folk festival, Open Mic, 10pm.....what I thought was a "showcase" event turned out to be a pub event...not my style at all. I was fifth on the list and I witnessed as one by one, those before me struggled to get a fair hearing. Just before I was due to go on I was feeling pretty upset that I had been somewhat misled.

So, I had three choices- an 'American Pie' set of pub songs (not me, so that was a "no") just do my set list and get off wounded and hurt. (an easier option than the one I finally decided upon) So, I decided to go into the lions den and come out the winner.

Hard work, as the audience were not initially up for listening, and surprised that someone actually wanted a two-way conversation with them. "Who is this guy talking to us?" The set list wasn't designed for this but surprisingly it fulfilled the purpose admirably. Level Floor worked well especially as a noisy foursome in front of me knocked their drinks over and decided to have a heated debate as to who was to blame. They eventually started joining in the chorus. Unbelievable. And so the set went on, concluding with my version of "Hit the Road Jack". All in all I think folk music won but blood was nearly spilt, along with the sweat. The folk club spot the next day was a piece of cake in comparison.
