Now, some stuff about the songs......
SHOCK & SURPRISE
Various events simply shocked the world, and this covers several, and by no means all.
The policeman who was shot in the face at point blank range, A young landscape gardener who was murdered at Christmas, a brutal despot who was overthrown by the populas, and a horrid event that surprised the otherwise peaceful Norwegians.
ONLY WHAT WE WEAR
The banking crisis seems to have hit the poorest and made bigger openings for the richest amongst us.
Poverty is a harsh way to live and being pushed for every last penny one doesn't have seems to be the way, despite the rich having funds.
This is a story about a couple who try to prove you can get by.
LONDON ROAD
I wrote a song called Rosemary Lane. This is to compensate my daughter. She lives on the London Road.
REMINISCING
This song covers several "babies"- all ages!
AND THEN
I wrote the song "It's that time of year again" and thought it a pity that as a Christmas song it could only be sung a few times of the year, so I put some new words to the same tune, so I could sing it all year. It's about enjoying the hope in life.
RAINBOWS
I attempted to write a childrens song and this is what happened. It could be thought of as a childrens song.
LOVELY LADY
I knew a lady who suffered whilst helping others and looking cheerful in the process. When I learned she had been transferred to London, I was still told that she was "ok".
ALL THE OTHER CHILDREN
I saw a mother making a special event for her daughter in a local hostelry. Daughter looked happy, despite being in a room full of otherwise normal children.
THAT WAS NOT THE PLAN
I was chatting to a famous folk singer who unwittingly provided the starting thread to this song about things that don't quite go to plan.
ABSENCE
This
is about one of the most powerful love stories I know. Two people who
were so close, and when she became poorly, their love seemed to
strengthen beyond measure. I can imagine it grows in strength beyond
the grave.
IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN
I
sing one carol, "In the bleak midwinter". I feel it is such a shame
that I only get to sing it a few times a year. So I wrote another carol.
I
hope this goes some way to understanding the music. I do try to
disguise the meaning rather than a rather transparent, blunt approach.
And sometimes the meaning develops beyond the recording.
Set in delightful countryside, HANGOVER HILL STUDIO, in the capable hands of MATT BLACK was where I laboured over the songs to get the recording.
It was fun, and easy.
